Now I Am Paperby Uvi

I remember: a gentler sound The forest rustling in the rain Leaves were swirling all around I heard soft footsteps up the lane Snap! A twig fell, and I turned Just to feel your little foot Just to touch your hand, I yearned As you climbed my gnarled root I loved to hold you, swing you, sway The day would never turn dark I wished you’d never fly away Then came the time you made your mark The sun was playing hide and seek Between my branches, till it sunk And suddenly my heart grew weak You found the hollow in my trunk And at the moment when we part That was the time you made your mark Right there you drew—across my heart You carved an arrow in my bark Then came those years of loneliness Of thoughts that crawl just like a pest How can an old, stiff timber guess Why birds would leave, forget the nest? So I remember: a gentler sound The forest rustling in the rain Leaves were swirling all around But then harsh footsteps up the lane And with an ax they cut me down Removed my limbs, discarded scrap They carried me to a distant town My heart-and-arrow bleeding sap They stripped my bark. Where is my bough? They chopped me up. Who is this lumber? They pressed, they grinded... Who am I now? Once I was wood. Then chip. Then fiber. Now I am paper. This book you’re holding, This whisper as the pages turn This is my voice, my love, my longing This is my story. So—if you listen— Can you remember? A gentler sound The forest rustling in the rain Leaves are swirling all around Here come soft footsteps up the lane... | See the video |
